A-pee-logy required?

I had grand thoughts about doing some kind of “Welcome 2009” post. You know, the kind with resolutions and other weighty reflections on the year that has passed and the year that’s to come.

But instead? Instead, I am compelled to start the year by drawing your attention to Deb On The Rocks, a very, very funny woman who I met at BlogHer last year and who is facing a New Year’s Quandary.

Her dog peed on her neighbor’s lettuce. What to do?

According to Deb, there are more and more front yard vegetable gardens in her neighborhood, a trend that she blames on the old growth trees in everyone’s back yards. Regardless, I applaud this. Food in front, people. Food in front.

However, one of her neighbors planted what looks like it might be (based on her pictures) ornamental kale by their mailbox, and possibly some lettuce. There’s definitely Swiss chard there, and that’s definitely edible, but I don’t know what else in the mix is actually edible, as well.

Deb’s dilemma? To tell the neighbors or not to tell the neighbors?

Some of the commenters who have already weighed in share my viewpoint: If you’re going to grow things, you probably ought to wash them. Obviously other garden critters take a leak in the plot from time to time. But this does feel a little different to me. I mean, the dog was on a leash. With an owner. So does it merit a little more proactive apology? Or should Deb just run the other direction?

LOL , So Funny , I think She should Have Led the Dog Away and should do so in the future , but I think She Shouldn’t Tel The Neighbors , They should have common sense themselves.

That is super funny. I would not tell but I am paranoid about my grand dog messing up people’s mailbox flowers. So I walk her as far away from them as I can.

Oh no! I’d probably assume that they wash their veggies. In fact, it’s doubtful River would have peed there unless some other animal did first.

    ;-)

Lynda, here’s hoping those neighbors have common sense.

    Flowergardengirl, isn’t it funny, though?

Ree, I totally agree with you about one pee begetting another. SO funny.

You all are wonderful! I am definitely going to lead him further away from any potential pretty pee spots, regardless of whether they are edible or not. We still have some training to do!

Deb, that’s probably a good thing. Just based on what I’ve seen of what dog pee does to lawns (which are a waste of space and money and resources anyway, so maybe the brown spots are a good thing in disguise?), I’m guessing it’s not all that good for other plants, edible or decorative or whatever they may be.
