Not living up to her name this year

There’s nothing like a little turnaround to make your heart happy. What once was lost but now is found and all that jazz?

For a couple of weeks, The Mint Killer had been mentioning that she was, in fact, successfully growing mint this year. I heard her talking about it, but really, the proof is in the leaves, people. The proof is in the leaves.

Platter of herbsOn the Fourth of July, while I was at her house learning how to scale a fish (which is a story for another day, and that day is probably tomorrow…), she set down a plate of fresh herbs.

“Look!” said The Mint Killer. “Mint! That I grew!”

And there it was, along with some purple basil that she also grew.

The green basil in the photo? I grew that. But I’m more excited about The Mint Killer’s success with her own herbs.

She still gets to keep her nickname, though. What fun would it be to change what I call her now? It’s already going to be tricky enough when the four-and-a-half-year-old turns five and I have to come up with a new name for her.

I think that should be on your agenda for next year, Mint Killer. Definitely for next year. It’s time you graduate to the harder stuff.
